Wilderness Alternative Expedition southern circuit
This journey moves through colour and scale: the green and silver marshes of Amboseli beneath Kilimanjaro, the shadowed lava and hills of Tsavo West, then the warmer red earth and broad horizons of Tsavo East. Five days is the compact version. It works when accommodation is positioned intelligently and the final direction—Nairobi or coast—is agreed before quoting.
Why this journey works
The parks are not interchangeable. Amboseli is open, water-shaped elephant country. Tsavo West is geological, wooded and rugged. Tsavo East releases the horizon again, but in a hotter palette of red soil, river systems and immense distance. Travelling in this order makes the change legible rather than random.
At a glance
- Five days and four nights
- Two nights Amboseli, one Tsavo West and one Tsavo East
- Private Land Cruiser and continuous Kenyan guide
- Best as a Nairobi-to-coast progression or a compact Nairobi circuit
- Choose six days if you want a slower second night in Tsavo
Three landscapes, one visual story
The post-itinerary gallery should move in sequence: Kilimanjaro and elephant country, a red track entering wooded Tsavo West, lions or giraffes on deeper soil, then the huge horizons and water points of Tsavo East. The colours should change as the route changes.
Accommodation that supports the route
The same itinerary can be built with well-chosen mid-range, premium or luxury accommodation. Location matters as much as the room: a camp close to the right gate can protect the best morning light, while a property farther from the park may trade access for privacy, space or a different landscape. We recommend the final combination after knowing your dates, room needs, comfort level and photographic priorities.

Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1 — Nairobi to Amboseli
Depart early for southern Kenya. As settlement thins, the landscape becomes part of the anticipation: dry country, distant hills and the possibility of Kilimanjaro shaping the approach. Arrive for lunch and an afternoon drive across the Amboseli basin. Follow current movement between wetlands, open pans and acacia country before dinner and overnight.
Day 2 — Amboseli: water beneath the dry plain
Start at dawn and allow the day to be guided by behaviour. Elephant families may feed through the marshes; zebra and wildebeest move across drier ground; raptors, waterbirds and smaller mammals fill the spaces between headline sightings. Choose a picnic route or split drives according to distance, heat and guest energy. A second night protects the morning light and prevents Amboseli becoming only a transfer stop.
Day 3 — Amboseli to Tsavo West
After a final early drive, leave the Kilimanjaro basin and travel toward volcanic country. Watch the road surface, vegetation and horizon change. Enter Tsavo West through the gate that best serves the confirmed lodge and route, game viewing on the way. The afternoon is about wooded valleys, lava, hills and water rather than trying to reproduce the open Amboseli experience.
Day 4 — Tsavo West to Tsavo East
Use the morning for a Tsavo West drive and, when practical, Mzima Springs or another landscape feature that fits the route. Then continue east. The country opens again and the soil warms toward deep red. Cross into Tsavo East and use the afternoon to begin reading its different scale: long roads, river influence, immense sky and wildlife carrying the colour of the dust.
Day 5 — Tsavo East and onward
Begin early near water, riverine vegetation or open red-earth country according to current conditions. A private vehicle lets the guide leave space around wildlife and wait for a crossing instead of forcing it. After the morning drive, continue to the agreed end point. The route can finish toward Nairobi, but it is especially natural when it continues to the Kenya coast, where the safari rhythm can finally slow beside the Indian Ocean.
