Wilderness Alternative Expedition signature journey

A deliberately paced all-road safari linking Amboseli, the Great Rift Valley and the Maasai Mara without pretending the distances are short. The crucial reset is a Nairobi positioning night after Amboseli: it breaks the longest crossing, protects the next day’s experience and makes Naivasha a pleasure rather than a late-arrival box to tick.

Why this journey works

Driving directly from Amboseli to Naivasha can consume most of a day in traffic and leave little appetite for the lake. This route returns to Nairobi for a comfortable positioning night, then travels northwest to Naivasha rested. From there the road continues logically to the Maasai Mara. The result costs one hotel night but buys back energy, safer pacing and a far better Rift Valley experience.

Journey at a glance

  • Honest all-road routing with a restorative Nairobi positioning night
  • Two nights in Amboseli for Kilimanjaro, wetlands and elephant behaviour
  • Lake Naivasha boat experience and optional Crescent Island walk
  • Three nights in the Maasai Mara with two full safari days
  • Private vehicle throughout for families and travellers who prefer road continuity

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1 — Nairobi to Amboseli: south to elephant country

Leave Nairobi after breakfast and drive toward Amboseli, watching the city give way to dry plains and distant volcanic horizons. Arrive for lunch and a short rest before the first game drive. As the day cools, elephants often move out from the marshes, while giraffe, zebra and antelope cross the open pans beneath Kilimanjaro when cloud permits. Meals: Lunch and dinner. Overnight: Amboseli area.

Day 2 — Amboseli from first light to golden hour

Begin early for the clearest chance of seeing Kilimanjaro and the softest photographic light. Spend the morning around permanent wetlands and open plains, watching the relationships between elephant families, buffalo, hippo and prolific birdlife. Pause through the hottest hours, then return in the afternoon to explore a different sector as dust and backlight reshape the landscape. Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Overnight: Amboseli area.

Day 3 — Amboseli to Nairobi: a deliberate reset

Take a final morning drive before breakfast, then begin the return to Nairobi. This is not a wasted transit day: it is the practical hinge that keeps the longer safari comfortable and geographically sensible. Check into a well-located city hotel, enjoy a proper shower and unhurried evening, and prepare for the Rift Valley chapter ahead. Meals: Breakfast. Overnight: Nairobi.

Day 4 — Nairobi to Lake Naivasha: down the escarpment

After breakfast, drive northwest to the Great Rift Valley, pausing at a safe viewpoint when conditions allow. Reach Naivasha around midday. Later, take a private boat trip among fish eagles, pelicans and hippos, keeping a respectful distance. An optional guided walk on Crescent Island can be added for an easy on-foot encounter with plains wildlife. Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Overnight: Lake Naivasha.

Day 5 — Lake Naivasha to Maasai Mara

Leave after breakfast and continue through the Rift Valley highlands toward Narok and the Maasai Mara. The final approach opens into rolling grasslands and scattered acacias. After lunch and time to settle in, take an afternoon drive as the heat eases and the first Mara evening gathers around the vehicle. Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Overnight: Maasai Mara.

Day 6 — Maasai Mara: read the plains

Set out at dawn with a picnic or return to camp between drives. Your guide uses tracks, alarm calls, local knowledge and patient observation to choose where to spend time. The day may unfold around a lion pride, elephants moving between feeding grounds, cheetahs using a rise to scan, or a leopard hidden in riverine shade. The aim is depth, not a hurried species list. Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Overnight: Maasai Mara.

Day 7 — Maasai Mara: a second full field day

Use the second full day to explore a different habitat or return to a promising sighting. Seasonal movement may draw the drive toward the Mara River; at other times resident wildlife and quieter plains are equally rewarding. An optional balloon flight can be arranged in advance at additional cost, followed by a normal private game-drive programme. Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Overnight: Maasai Mara.

Day 8 — Maasai Mara to Nairobi

Enjoy a final early drive if your camp location and road schedule allow, then return to Nairobi by private vehicle with comfort stops en route. Arrival is normally late afternoon, traffic permitting. We recommend a late-evening international departure or a final Nairobi night. Meals: Breakfast.

Your safari rhythm

This is a road journey, so scenery and transitions are part of the safari: the dry southern plains, Nairobi’s highland edge, the Rift Valley escarpment and finally the rolling Mara grasslands. Game-drive time is concentrated where it matters—two strong Amboseli sessions and three nights in the Mara—while Naivasha provides a quieter interval on the water.

Transport and timing

All transfers are by private safari vehicle. Approximate road times vary with traffic, weather and road conditions: Nairobi–Amboseli 4–5 hours; Amboseli–Nairobi 4–5 hours; Nairobi–Naivasha about 2–3 hours; Naivasha–Maasai Mara about 5–6 hours. The Nairobi positioning night is intentional and avoids an unnecessarily punishing Amboseli–Naivasha day.

Road times are approximate and can change with traffic, weather and road conditions. Scheduled flight times and routing are reconfirmed for your travel dates. If an airline changes its timetable, we adjust the operating plan while preserving the journey’s essential character.
