Six days, three ecosystems and a route that follows the map: Nairobi to Lake Naivasha, onward to Lake Nakuru, then south-west into the Maasai Mara. The lakes introduce Kenya through water, woodland and birdlife; three nights in the Mara provide the depth a serious wildlife safari deserves.

Why this journey works

Naivasha comes before Nakuru because it lies first on the westbound road from Nairobi. The sequence avoids unnecessary backtracking and uses each overnight for a distinct experience: lakeshore calm, a compact rhino-rich national park, then the expansive Mara.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1 — Nairobi to Lake Naivasha: a soft landing in the Rift Valley

Travel west from Nairobi and pause at the escarpment where weather permitting the Rift Valley stretches toward distant volcanoes. Descend to Lake Naivasha for lunch and a restful afternoon beside the water. A boat excursion, subject to wind and lake conditions, brings you close to the life of the shallows: hippos surfacing between papyrus, fish eagles dropping from fever trees and waterbirds feeding at eye level. The pace is deliberately light, leaving room to recover from a flight or simply watch the lake change colour toward evening.

Day 2 — Naivasha experience, then north to Lake Nakuru

Begin with a guided activity suited to your interests: a second lakeshore excursion, a conservancy walk where conditions and safety permit, or a relaxed morning at the lodge. After lunch, drive north through the Rift Valley agricultural corridor toward Nakuru. Check in near the park and, when timing allows, take a short orientation drive. Lake Nakuru is a more enclosed landscape than the Mara—acacia woodland, rocky escarpment, grassland and alkaline shore compressed into one park. The change in habitat is immediate and prepares the eye for a different kind of safari.

Day 3 — Lake Nakuru morning safari, then onward to the Mara

Enter Lake Nakuru National Park early, before day visitors build. Search the open flats and woodland edges for white and black rhino, Rothschild’s giraffe, buffalo and leopard signs; flamingo numbers vary with water level and food conditions and are never guaranteed. After a well-paced morning drive and breakfast or brunch, turn south-west for the Maasai Mara. This is the longest road stage, so comfort stops and an unhurried lunch are built in. Arrive at camp in the late afternoon or early evening. If daylight and gate rules allow, the last kilometres may offer your first Mara sightings; otherwise settle in and let the night sounds introduce the plains.

Day 4 — Maasai Mara: following the morning story

Start before sunrise and let the guide build the day from evidence: tracks across the road, vultures leaving a roost, impala staring into a drainage line or hyena voices carrying from the dark. The Mara rewards this kind of attention. Spend the productive hours with one territory rather than criss-crossing the reserve for radio calls. Depending on location, return for lunch or continue with a picnic to reach river systems and quieter grassland. Afternoon light brings texture back to the plains and often renews predator movement.

Day 5 — A full, flexible Mara day

Today belongs entirely to the Mara. During migration season, your guide evaluates herd location, pressure around the rivers and the likelihood of useful viewing without promising a crossing. At other times, resident prides, elephant families, cheetah, hyena and plains game remain the focus. Choose a long game drive with a picnic, or split the day for rest at camp. A balloon safari may be added at extra cost and subject to availability, but it is not required for the journey to feel complete. The aim is space: time to watch, photograph and understand what the animals are doing.

Day 6 — Last dawn in the grass and road to Nairobi

Take a final early drive, often close to camp where guides know overnight movement. Return for breakfast, say goodbye to the camp team and begin the road journey to Nairobi. Arrival time depends on Mara location, road conditions and city traffic; a late-afternoon arrival is typical. A scheduled flight can be quoted as an upgrade when onward international timing makes the road unsuitable.

Your safari rhythm

The first two days are varied and accessible; the third is a genuine transfer day with a rewarding morning safari before departure. Once in the Mara, the pace slows and the guide can work patiently across full wildlife days.

Transport and timing

Nairobi–Naivasha is about 2–2½ hours. Naivasha–Nakuru is normally 1½–2 hours. Lake Nakuru–Mara commonly takes 5–6 hours depending on road conditions and camp location. Mara–Nairobi is usually 5½–6½ hours.

Road times are approximate and can change with traffic, weather and road conditions. Scheduled flight times and routing are reconfirmed for your travel dates. If an airline changes its timetable, we adjust the operating plan while preserving the journey’s essential character.
