Wilderness Alternative Expedition signature journey
This five-day private safari begins with water, escarpment and Rift Valley light before opening into the great grasslands of the Maasai Mara. One night at Lake Naivasha breaks the journey naturally; three nights in the Mara protect the part clients travel furthest to experience.
Why this journey works
Naivasha lies directly on the westward route from Nairobi. Starting here avoids backtracking, adds a completely different ecosystem and creates a comfortable first day before the longer drive into the Mara.
Journey at a glance
- Logical westbound route: Nairobi → Lake Naivasha → Maasai Mara
- Boat excursion among waterbirds and hippos, conditions permitting
- Three Mara nights rather than sacrificing wildlife time to transfers
- Private guiding with picnic-day flexibility in the reserve or conservancies
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1 — Nairobi to Lake Naivasha: from city edge to Rift Valley water
Leave Nairobi after breakfast and climb to the escarpment, where the Rift Valley falls away in broad volcanic contours. Descend toward Naivasha and arrive in time for lunch at a lakeside lodge. Later, take a private boat excursion when wind and water conditions are suitable. Hippos breathe at the surface, fish eagles call from fever trees and pelicans, cormorants and kingfishers work the shallows. The experience is intentionally gentle after travel: no race to a gate, just fresh air, water and an early night. An alternative guided walk or conservancy activity can be arranged where appropriate and safe.
Day 2 — Lake Naivasha to the Maasai Mara: the landscape opens
Set out after an early breakfast, following the Rift Valley south-west through farm country and the highlands around Narok. The drive is part of Kenya’s geography rather than filler: cultivated slopes give way to wider pastoral country, then the first true savannah horizons. Stop for comfort and refreshments en route and arrive at the selected Mara camp for lunch or a late lunch, depending on location and road conditions. After settling in, head out for an introductory evening game drive. The first sight of giraffe or elephant against an uninterrupted sky marks the moment the journey changes scale.
Day 3 — Mara dawn: predators, plains and patient observation
Leave in the cool pre-sunrise air. Lions and hyenas may still be moving, while cheetahs use open ground and raised mounds to watch for opportunity. Your guide reads tracks, alarm calls and the behaviour of prey species, choosing a route that avoids unnecessary crowding. Return for a late breakfast or stay out with a picnic if a sighting is developing. Explore a contrasting habitat in the afternoon—riverine woodland, seasonal marsh or open plain—so the day becomes a story of the ecosystem, not a chase for the Big Five. Finish in the last amber light and listen as the daytime soundscape begins to change.
Day 4 — A deeper Mara day: rivers, herds and the freedom to wait
With no transfer ahead, this is the day to go farther or stay longer. In migration months, herd distribution and river conditions influence the route, but crossings can never be promised. Outside the migration, resident wildlife remains exceptional: elephant families, topi on termite mounds, giraffe moving through croton and big cats holding territories year-round. Carry a picnic and explore a quieter sector, or divide the day into morning and afternoon drives with a long camp pause. The private vehicle gives your guide permission to wait for behaviour—an approach that creates stronger memories and better photographs than constant motion.
Day 5 — Final game drive and return to Nairobi
Take one last early drive close to camp, allowing time for a meaningful encounter rather than a hurried lap. After breakfast, depart by road for Nairobi with lunch or a suitable stop en route, arriving later in the day depending on traffic. A scheduled flight from the Mara can be substituted in the final proposal for travellers who value time over road travel. Airport or hotel transfer is arranged around the confirmed onward plan.
Your safari rhythm
The safari moves from a gentle lakeshore opening to three nights of deep wildlife time. Naivasha activities are weather- and water-level dependent; in the Mara, days are planned around animal movement and your preferred pace.
Transport and timing
Nairobi to Naivasha is usually about 2–2½ hours by road. Naivasha to the Mara is commonly 5–6 hours depending on the camp, road conditions and stops. Return to Nairobi is generally 5½–6½ hours, or a scheduled flight can be quoted.
Road times are approximate and can change with traffic, weather and road conditions. Scheduled flight times and routing are reconfirmed for your travel dates. If an airline changes its timetable, we adjust the operating plan while preserving the journey’s essential character.
Accommodation approach
We match the route to well-run camps and lodges in the right wildlife area—not simply the most familiar name. Your proposal can be shaped around intimate tented camps, family rooms or a more luxurious stay, subject to availability and the season.
