Wilderness Alternative Expedition signature journey
A seven-day private safari with three nights beneath Kilimanjaro and three nights in the Maasai Mara. Scheduled flights through Nairobi’s Wilson Airport protect time on safari and replace what would otherwise be an exhausting cross-country road transfer.
Why this journey works
Three nights in Amboseli give the mountain, elephant herds and changing light more than one chance to reveal themselves. Three Mara nights then create two full, unhurried game-drive days, while the Wilson connection turns the transfer into a clean change of landscape rather than a lost day on the road.
Journey at a glance
- Three nights in Amboseli for elephants, wetlands and Kilimanjaro light
- Scheduled air connection via Wilson Airport
- Three nights in the Maasai Mara with two full game-drive days
- Private Land Cruiser and an adaptable, sighting-led pace
- A strong two-ecosystem safari without punishing road mileage
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1 — Nairobi to Amboseli: the mountain appears
Meet your guide after breakfast and drive south across the Athi plains toward Amboseli. The road gradually opens into drier country, and Kilimanjaro—when the weather allows—begins to rise beyond the horizon. After lunch and time to settle in, take a first afternoon game drive through open grassland and seasonal pans. Elephants often move between feeding grounds and the permanent wetlands as the heat softens. Meals: Lunch and dinner. Overnight: Amboseli area.
Day 2 — Amboseli: elephants, wetlands and early light
Leave before breakfast or just after first light, depending on your camp. This is the hour for clean mountain views, elephant silhouettes and predators finishing their night activity. Spend time around the Enkongo Narok and Ol Tukai wetland systems, where buffalo, hippo, waterbirds and elephant families gather. Return for a relaxed midday break, then head out again as the plains cool and the light turns gold. Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Overnight: Amboseli area.
Day 3 — A second full day in Amboseli
A second full day lets the safari move beyond the obvious viewpoints. Your guide may explore the western plains, acacia woodland or observation areas overlooking the marshes, choosing the route from recent movement and visibility. Watch how matriarchs guide young calves, how birds follow feeding herds and how dust, cloud and mountain light transform the same scene from one hour to the next. Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Overnight: Amboseli area.
Day 4 — Amboseli to Maasai Mara by air via Wilson
Enjoy a final short drive if the flight schedule permits, then transfer to the Amboseli airstrip. Fly to Nairobi’s Wilson Airport and connect with the scheduled service to the Maasai Mara. This routing replaces a punishing cross-country drive with a practical air connection. Your Mara guide meets you at the airstrip, and the transfer to camp becomes the first game drive across the plains. Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Overnight: Maasai Mara.
Day 5 — Maasai Mara: follow the morning story
Start early while tracks are fresh and the grass still holds the night. Rather than chasing every radio call, your guide reads the landscape: vultures dropping toward a kill, herbivores staring in one direction, or hyenas moving with purpose. A longer sighting may mean waiting quietly for a leopard to descend or a pride to become active. Return for lunch or carry a picnic when the best area lies farther from camp. Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Overnight: Maasai Mara.
Day 6 — Maasai Mara: a full, flexible safari day
Choose a full-day game drive with a picnic or split morning and afternoon drives. Depending on season and camp location, explore riverine woodland, open plains, kopjes or the Mara River corridor. Wildlife is wild and no sighting is guaranteed, but time and patient positioning create the best chance of meaningful encounters. An optional balloon safari can be arranged in advance at additional cost. Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner. Overnight: Maasai Mara.
Day 7 — Final Mara morning and flight to Nairobi
Take one last dawn drive, when the plains are quiet and the light is forgiving. After breakfast, transfer to the airstrip for the scheduled flight to Wilson Airport. The safari ends in Nairobi with the option to arrange an onward airport transfer or city accommodation. Meals: Breakfast.
Your safari rhythm
Mornings begin before the heat lifts, when Kilimanjaro may be clearest and predators are still active. In the Mara, each day is planned around current sightings: a full-day drive may make sense when a coalition is moving far from camp, while split drives can preserve the softer dawn and evening light. Your private vehicle allows quiet waits, sensible meal timing and longer observation when behaviour develops.
Transport and timing
Private road transfer from Nairobi to Amboseli. On Day 4, a scheduled flight links Amboseli with Nairobi Wilson Airport, followed by the onward scheduled service to the Maasai Mara; timings and airstrip are confirmed for your travel date. Mara airstrip transfers and the final scheduled flight to Wilson Airport are included in the route design.
Road times are approximate and can change with traffic, weather and road conditions. Scheduled flight times and routing are reconfirmed for your travel dates. If an airline changes its timetable, we adjust the operating plan while preserving the journey’s essential character.
