A private seven-day Machame climb across Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Wall and Karanga, with two Moshi lodge nights and a fully supported local mountain team.
Machame is Kilimanjaro’s classic southern approach: forest, open moorland, volcanic plateau and a complete traverse beneath Kibo before the summit attempt. We use the full seven-mountain-day rhythm, retaining the Karanga night instead of compressing the route. The complete programme is nine days and eight nights, including one lodge night in Moshi before the climb and one after descent.

Why choose the seven-day Machame Route?
Machame rewards travellers who want changing landscapes and a strong mountain journey rather than the shortest headline. The route climbs high towards Lava Tower, around 4,600 metres, before sleeping lower at Barranco. The guided Barranco Wall scramble and a separate night at Karanga then spread the effort before Barafu. Machame is popular and its camps can be busy; the attraction is its route shape and scenery, not a promise of solitude.

Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1 — Arrive in Moshi
Meet the Wilderness Alternative team for your itinerary-linked transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport to Moshi. Check into the pre-climb lodge, meet the lead guide and work through the route, equipment, health reporting and duffel plan while there is still time to solve any kit issue.
Day 2 — Machame Gate to Machame Camp
After registration, enter Kilimanjaro’s humid montane forest. Roots, mud and rain can make this opening stage slower than it looks. The guide establishes a measured pace while the crew moves ahead to prepare camp.
Day 3 — Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Climb from forest into heath and open moorland, then gain the rocky edge of the Shira Plateau. Kibo and the Western Breach begin to dominate the skyline when the cloud lifts.
Day 4 — Shira to Barranco via Lava Tower
Cross alpine desert towards Lava Tower, approximately 4,600 metres, before descending to Barranco. This higher excursion followed by a lower sleeping camp is valuable for acclimatisation, but it is also a long, exposed day when eating, drinking and honest symptom reporting matter.
Day 5 — Barranco Wall to Karanga
Climb the Barranco Wall under guide supervision, using hands in places on a non-technical scramble. Continue across ridges and valleys to Karanga. Keeping this night provides rest and another sleep near 4,000 metres before high camp.
Day 6 — Karanga to Barafu
Reach Barafu’s exposed ridge, eat and prepare every summit layer, bottle and headlamp in daylight. The afternoon is for rest, hydration, guide observations and a clear plan for the night ascent.
Day 7 — Stella Point, Uhuru Peak and Mweka Camp
Leave around midnight and climb slowly on scree towards Stella Point. Continue around the crater rim to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres only when health, time and conditions allow. The summit is the turn-around point: descend through Barafu for food and continue to thicker air at Mweka Camp.
Day 8 — Mweka Gate and Moshi
Descend through forest to Mweka Gate, complete park formalities and say farewell to the mountain crew. Return to Moshi for a shower, a proper meal and the included post-climb lodge night.
Day 9 — Departure or onward Tanzania journey
Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport or begin a separately arranged safari or coast extension. We keep the recovery night so summit day is not followed immediately by a rushed long transfer.

From USD 2,850 per person. We confirm one clear quotation for your dates, confirmed group size and requirements. The price is not created by removing the Karanga acclimatisation night or weakening the crew and camp plan.

Is Machame right for you?
This is a high-altitude trek, not a technical climb. It suits well-trained travellers who are comfortable with repeated walking days, simple tented camps, a guided scramble and severe summit-night cold. Fitness helps with the work; it cannot guarantee acclimatisation or the summit. The guide’s decision about pace, route changes or descent comes before the target.
