A private six-day Kilimanjaro climb using shared huts, with a second Horombo night for acclimatisation before Kibo, Gilman’s Point and Uhuru Peak.
Marangu is Kilimanjaro’s only standard route with a chain of mountain huts. That changes the sleeping arrangement, not the altitude. We use six mountain days and retain a second Horombo night for acclimatisation rather than selling the familiar compressed five-day schedule. The complete package is eight days and seven nights, including one Moshi lodge night before and after the climb.

Why choose the six-day Marangu Route?
Marangu suits travellers who prefer a roof and shared sleeping buildings to tented camp life. The broad trail crosses forest, moorland and the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. Our second Horombo night adds a purposeful acclimatisation walk before Kibo Hut. Shared huts can be busy and basic, and the route reaches the same extreme altitude as every other Kilimanjaro ascent; it should never be sold as “easy”.

Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1 — Arrive in Moshi
Transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport as arranged and check into the Moshi lodge. The lead guide explains the out-and-back route, shared hut system, health monitoring, equipment and crew plan.
Day 2 — Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Register at Marangu Gate and climb steadily through dense forest to Mandara Hut. If time and conditions suit, a short walk towards Maundi Crater introduces the country above camp.
Day 3 — Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Leave the forest for heath and moorland. Giant groundsels and lobelias appear as views open towards Mawenzi and Kibo. The sleeping-altitude gain is meaningful, so the guide keeps the pace conservative.
Day 4 — Horombo acclimatisation day
Make an acclimatisation walk towards Zebra Rocks or the Mawenzi side, then return to Horombo for a second night. This is a deliberate adaptation day, not spare time in the hut.
Day 5 — Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Cross the dry, exposed Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. At Kibo, eat, organise every summit layer and rest in the shared hut before the night ascent.
Day 6 — Gilman’s Point, Uhuru Peak and Horombo
Begin around midnight and climb loose volcanic ground towards Gilman’s Point. Continue around the crater rim to Uhuru Peak when health, time and weather allow. Descend to Kibo for food and continue to Horombo. It is the longest day of the route.
Day 7 — Horombo to Marangu Gate and Moshi
Descend through moorland and forest, complete certificate formalities and hold a transparent crew farewell before returning to Moshi for the included post-climb lodge night.
Day 8 — Departure or onward Tanzania journey
Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport or continue into a separately arranged safari or coast itinerary.

Is Marangu right for you?
Marangu is a non-technical high-altitude trek for climbers who genuinely prefer shared huts. Bedrooms can be communal and noisy, facilities are basic and a sleeping bag is still required. The Horombo acclimatisation day improves the itinerary’s rhythm, but no schedule guarantees acclimatisation or the summit.
Read the complete Marangu Route guide, compare tents, huts and toilets, and prepare with the packing list, training guide and summit-night guide.
Plan your private Marangu climb
Send your preferred dates, group size and previous altitude or multi-day trekking experience. Late enquiries are welcome whenever huts, crew, transfers and the lodge can still be arranged.
