A private eight-day Lemosho climb through western forest, Shira Plateau, Moir, Lava Tower and Barranco, with two Moshi lodge nights and full camp support.
Lemosho gives Kilimanjaro time to unfold. Its quieter western opening moves from rainforest onto the Shira Plateau before joining the southern circuit through Lava Tower, Barranco, Karanga and Barafu. Our eight-mountain-day programme includes Moir Hut camp area on Day 3 and is packaged as ten days and nine nights with a lodge night in Moshi before and after the climb.

Why choose the eight-day Lemosho Route?
The longer western approach creates a calm progression through forest, moorland and open volcanic country. Crossing to the Moir area adds time before the high excursion at Lava Tower and the lower sleep at Barranco. Lemosho is quieter at the start, but it is not lonely throughout: it joins Machame’s busier southern circuit. Its real strength is the fuller acclimatisation rhythm and variety of landscape.

Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1 — Arrive in Moshi
Transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport as arranged in your itinerary and settle into the Moshi lodge. Meet the lead guide for a route briefing, equipment and duffel check, and an honest discussion of pace, health reporting and summit-night decisions.
Day 2 — Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa
After registration on Kilimanjaro’s western side, enter rainforest and climb towards Mti Mkubwa, also known as Big Tree Camp. The trail may be wet or muddy, so the first day is deliberately controlled.
Day 3 — Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1
Leave the forest for heath and moorland as the path reaches the western edge of the Shira Plateau. The views broaden across an ancient caldera, with Kibo appearing ahead when cloud permits.
Day 4 — Shira 1 to Moir Hut camp area
Traverse open volcanic terrain at a measured pace to the Moir area. If health, weather and arrival time support it, the guide may add a short acclimatisation movement before dinner. The overnight remains in tents.
Day 5 — Moir to Barranco via Lava Tower
Climb into alpine desert towards Lava Tower, approximately 4,600 metres, then descend beneath the southern ice fields to Barranco. The higher excursion and lower sleep are useful, while the length and exposure of the day require patient pacing.
Day 6 — Barranco Wall to Karanga
Make the guided Barranco Wall scramble, using hands in places, then cross a sequence of ridges and valleys to Karanga. A shorter afternoon gives time for food, rest and guide observations.
Day 7 — Karanga to Barafu
Climb onto Barafu’s exposed ridge. Eat early, organise every warm layer and water container, and rest. The lead guide confirms the summit plan after checking health, weather and the group’s pace.
Day 8 — Stella Point, Uhuru Peak and Mweka
Begin around midnight and climb slowly to Stella Point. Continue around the crater rim to Uhuru Peak only when health and conditions allow. Descend through Barafu for food and continue lower to Mweka Camp on the expedition’s longest day.
Day 9 — Mweka Gate and Moshi
Return through forest to Mweka Gate, complete park formalities and hold the crew farewell. Transfer to Moshi for the included post-climb lodge night.
Day 10 — Departure or onward Tanzania journey
Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport or connect with a separately planned safari or coast journey after recovery time.

Is Lemosho right for you?
Lemosho suits travellers who can invest in a longer scenic approach and are comfortable camping throughout. Standard Lemosho is a high-altitude trek rather than a technical climb, but repeated days, the Barranco Wall, severe cold and a long summit-and-descent day make preparation essential. No itinerary guarantees acclimatisation or a summit.
Read the complete Lemosho Route guide, then use the Kilimanjaro packing list, training guide, altitude guide and summit-night guide.
