A private seven-day Kilimanjaro climb from the northern trailhead, passing below Mawenzi before crossing the Saddle to Kibo and descending on the Marangu side.
Rongai is Kilimanjaro’s only principal northern approach. Its drier, more open landscape can feel remote, with views towards Kenya and a close encounter with Mawenzi before the summit line from Kibo. We use seven mountain days rather than compressing the route, inside a nine-day, eight-night package with a Moshi lodge night before and after the climb.
At a glance
- Complete programme: 9 days / 8 nights
- Time on Kilimanjaro: 7 mountain days / 6 tent nights
- Route: Rongai/Nalemoru ascent, Kibo summit approach, Marangu descent
- High point: Uhuru Peak, 5,895 m, when health and conditions allow
- Style: Private, fully supported tented expedition
- Start and finish: Moshi, with itinerary-linked airport transfers
- Guide price: From USD 3,400 per person
Why choose the seven-day Rongai Route?
Rongai suits travellers who want a quieter northern entry, broad views and time beneath Mawenzi. The north can be relatively drier when the southern slopes are wetter, although no side of Kilimanjaro is rainproof. The route has fewer dramatic climb-high, sleep-lower moments than the longer western approaches, so retaining seven mountain days and a controlled pace matters.

Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1 — Arrive in Moshi
Transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport as arranged and settle into the Moshi lodge. The lead guide reviews the longer drive to the northern trailhead, camp sequence, water plan, equipment and health reporting.
Day 2 — Nale Moru to Simba Camp
Drive around Kilimanjaro, complete registration and start through cultivated country and forest towards heath. Simba Camp looks towards the Kenyan plains when the air is clear.
Day 3 — Simba Camp to Second Cave
Climb steadily across open heath as views of Kibo and the eastern ice widen. The landscape is drier and more open than the southern forest approaches.
Day 4 — Second Cave to Third Cave
Continue through moorland on a controlled stage designed to preserve energy and acclimatisation. The route uses the Third Cave sequence for this departure.
Day 5 — Third Cave to Mawenzi Tarn
Climb into rocky highlands beneath Mawenzi’s jagged ridges. The tarn area is one of Rongai’s strongest landscape settings. Health, wind and arrival time decide whether an extra acclimatisation movement is useful.
Day 6 — Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo
Cross the broad Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. At the high camp area, eat, rest and prepare warm clothing, bottles and headlamps for the night ascent.
Day 7 — Gilman’s Point, Uhuru Peak and Horombo
Start near midnight on loose volcanic ground towards Gilman’s Point. Continue around the crater rim to Uhuru Peak when health, time and conditions allow. Descend to Kibo for food and continue to the Horombo area in thicker air.
Day 8 — Marangu Gate and Moshi
Descend through moorland and forest to Marangu Gate. Complete park formalities, thank the crew and return to Moshi for the included post-climb lodge night.
Day 9 — Departure or onward Tanzania journey
Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport or connect with a separately arranged safari or coast journey after recovery time.

Is Rongai right for you?
Rongai is a non-technical high-altitude trek for travellers who value the northern landscape, Mawenzi scenery and a route that crosses the mountain. It still involves repeated days, tented camps, severe summit cold and a long descent. A careful seven-day rhythm helps, but no route guarantees acclimatisation or the summit.
Read the complete Rongai Route guide, then prepare with the packing list, training guide, altitude guide and summit-night guide.
