A Maasai Mara safari can cost less than a famous luxury lodge or more than a long European holiday. Both statements can be true because “Mara safari” is not one product. A road based lodge outside the reserve, a fly in tented camp in a private conservancy and a private photographic vehicle during migration use completely different cost structures.
The price is built from accommodation, conservation access, transport, vehicle and guiding, meals, taxes and the time of year. Some camps quote an inclusive nightly rate but exclude reserve or conservancy fees. Others include game drives but charge private vehicle use separately. A low room price outside the reserve may require more driving and gate payments.
This guide gives you a planning framework and realistic bands, then shows the questions that turn an attractive rate into a complete safari total.
The six costs inside a Mara safari

- Transport from Nairobi or another destination.
- Safari vehicle and professional guide.
- Activities such as ballooning, walking or night drives.
- Taxes, local transfers, drinks, tips and other exclusions.
Ask for those lines separately even when the operator gives one package total. You will understand what changes if you add a night, choose another camp or fly instead of drive.
Current reserve fees change the seasonal calculation
As checked against Narok County and Mara conservation information in August 2026, the non resident adult fee for the Maasai Mara National Reserve is USD 100 from January through June and USD 200 from July through December. Child and resident categories differ. Entry validity and the location in which you sleep can affect how many fees are due.
This is a major part of the migration season total. A July four night safari can carry hundreds of dollars more in reserve fees than the same room rate in May. Do not compare seasonal lodge promotions without adding the applicable access charges.
The Mara Triangle is managed by the Mara Conservancy and publishes its conservation fee information. Private conservancies set their own guest fees, usually charged per person per night. A camp may include that fee in the package or show it separately. If you enter the National Reserve from a conservancy, reserve charges may also apply.
Fees and rules change. Request a dated written calculation for your nationality, age, camp and itinerary before paying.
Accommodation is more than the room
A Mara camp rate may include full board, shared game drives, airstrip transfers, laundry and selected drinks. A lodge rate may include only meals. A property outside the wildlife area may offer a lower room price but require a separate vehicle and daily gate access.
Location has real value. A camp inside the reserve or a conservancy can begin a game drive without a long gate approach. During busy months, that means more wildlife time and less queuing. A private conservancy can also allow controlled activities such as night drives or guided walks that are restricted in the main reserve.

Useful budget bands
For international travellers sharing a room and travelling as two people, these broad per person per night bands can help with early planning. They are not quotations and may exclude flights, reserve fees, private vehicles or premium activities:

Peak migration dates, single occupancy and private vehicle use can move a safari above these ranges. Green season offers can move it below them. Conservation fees must be checked separately unless explicitly included.
Flying versus driving
Scheduled flights from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport add airfare, taxes and airport transfers, but protect game viewing time. They are particularly valuable on a two or three night safari. Small aircraft baggage limits can require storage or repacking in Nairobi.
A private road vehicle has a larger fixed cost but can be shared by a family or group. It may stay with you for game drives, providing continuity and luggage flexibility. For one person, a scheduled flight can compare well with a private vehicle; for four, driving can become the better per person value.

Shared or private safari vehicle
Shared camp game drives reduce cost and can be sociable. The schedule and sightings are shared with other guests. A private vehicle lets you leave earlier, stay with one animal, devote time to birds or photography and return when your family is ready.
Private vehicle supplements vary significantly. Some camps include one when a group occupies enough rooms; others charge it daily. For serious photographers it is often the most valuable upgrade because seat position, equipment space and patience at a sighting directly shape the work.
Ask the maximum guests per vehicle. “Window seat guaranteed” does not always mean an uncrowded photography setup.
Why July to October costs more
The Great Migration draws demand, particularly around river crossings. Camps fill earlier, special offers disappear and the National Reserve non resident adult fee is in its higher July to December band. Christmas and New Year can also carry supplements.
Paying peak prices does not guarantee a crossing. Herd movement responds to rain and grazing, and river events cannot be scheduled. A good migration safari buys enough time, a well located base and patient guiding rather than a promise about a specific afternoon.
January to March can offer predators, young animals and clear days. The green season in April, May and parts of June brings dramatic skies, fewer vehicles and lower rates, with the possibility of rain and difficult roads. Our best time to visit the Mara guide compares these tradeoffs.
Reserve or conservancy cost
The main reserve offers classic open plains and access to migration river sections. It can also be busy at famous sightings. Conservancies limit beds and vehicle access, and may offer off road driving under rules, night drives and walking. Their fees help fund land leases and conservation arrangements with local landowners.

Activities that change the total
Balloon safari
A balloon flight is a significant per person extra and usually includes an early transfer and breakfast. Prices vary by operator and season. Book early for peak dates, disclose mobility or health concerns and understand cancellation rules.
Walking and night drives
These are usually associated with private conservancies or areas where regulations permit them. They may be included or charged separately. Ask whether a qualified guide and armed ranger are part of a walk.
Community visits
Fees should be transparent and benefit the hosts. Avoid treating a village as a free stop added to fill time. Ask who organises the visit, what is paid and what guests are invited to do.

- Share a private road vehicle with your group. Families and friends divide fixed costs.
- Choose a small scheduled departure. Keep good guiding while sharing transport.
- Prioritise location and guide over decorative luxury. A simpler camp in the right area can outperform a grand room far from wildlife.
- Ask for the complete total. An inclusive quote prevents expensive surprises.
