Wilderness Alternative Expedition signature journey

A four-day private safari for travellers who would rather understand a scene than merely photograph it. Three nights create the breathing room to work with first light, shifting weather and animal behaviour. A balloon flight can be added on one morning, but the safari remains complete without it.

Why this journey works

Wildlife photography improves when the schedule allows repetition. This journey gives your guide time to revisit a territory, learn where a pride or cheetah family is moving, and choose position and background instead of pursuing a hurried list.

Journey at a glance

  • Three nights for repeated, patient photographic work
  • Private Land Cruiser with window-row access and a guide who understands positioning
  • Optional sunrise balloon safari, subject to weather and availability
  • Long-lens portraits, environmental frames, behaviour and changing Mara light

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1 — Fly into the Mara and begin with evening light

Fly from Wilson Airport to the Mara and meet the photographic guide at the airstrip. During the transfer, we begin reading the landscape: open short grass favoured by cheetah, darker drainage lines used by lions, and riverine cover where leopard sightings require patience. After lunch, equipment check and a short briefing on vehicle etiquette, head out as the glare fades. The aim is not to collect species but to make a coherent first set of images—perhaps backlit dust around zebra, elephant against storm clouds or a predator moving through layered grass. Your guide positions once, then waits, allowing the animal to choose the photograph.

Day 2 — First light, fieldcraft and an unhurried full day

Depart in the blue hour. Low light is handled deliberately: silhouettes, movement, breath in cold air and animals emerging from darkness. If predators are active, remain with the behaviour; if the plains are quiet, use the morning to study herds, birds and the relationship between habitat and subject. Breakfast can be served in the field where permitted, preserving the productive hours. Return to camp for lunch, downloading and rest, or remain out with a picnic when distance and sightings justify it. The afternoon is planned around wind and sun angle, finishing with the warm rim light that gives the Mara its cinematic depth.

Day 3 — Balloon option or a second dawn at ground level

Choose an optional balloon safari for a different visual language: pre-dawn inflation, silent flight over tracks and watercourses, and the scale of the plains seen from above. Landing and breakfast arrangements depend on the confirmed operator. Travellers who stay on the ground take a private dawn drive, often the better choice for close behavioural photography. After a midday pause, return to a territory worth revisiting. Familiarity now matters: the guide may know where cubs are hidden, which route elephants use toward water or how a storm is changing the light. The evening is kept flexible for the strongest opportunity rather than a pre-set destination.

Day 4 — Final frames and scheduled flight to Nairobi

Use the last dawn selectively. Instead of driving far, work the most promising nearby habitat and give one subject time. This is often when the quiet images arrive: a lion crossing wet grass, oxpeckers lifting from buffalo, or a lone acacia holding the horizon. Return for breakfast and pack cameras before a game-viewing transfer to the airstrip. Fly to Wilson Airport, with onward arrangements available. The result is a compact portfolio built through patience, changing light and real observation—not a sequence of rushed sightings.

Your safari rhythm

The vehicle is used as a quiet mobile hide. We leave early, keep group size low, avoid crowding animals and build rest into the brightest hours. Beanbags, charging arrangements and photographer-friendly vehicle setup are confirmed before travel.

Transport and timing

Scheduled flights link Wilson Airport with Mara airstrips. Balloon operations depend on weather, concession permissions and availability; if selected, the final proposal identifies the operator, transfer and what is included.

Road times are approximate and can change with traffic, weather and road conditions. Scheduled flight times and routing are reconfirmed for your travel dates. If an airline changes its timetable, we adjust the operating plan while preserving the journey’s essential character.

Accommodation approach

We match the route to well-run camps and lodges in the right wildlife area—not simply the most familiar name. Your proposal can be shaped around intimate tented camps, family rooms or a more luxurious stay, subject to availability and the season.

What is included

  • Private safari transport and game drives in a custom Land Cruiser
  • Services of an experienced English-speaking safari guide
  • Accommodation and meals as confirmed in your final proposal

  • Scheduled internal flights where explicitly described in the final proposal
  • Drinking water in the safari vehicle

What is not included

  • Premium drinks, laundry and personal purchases
