Wilderness Alternative Expedition signature journey
Three days can still feel spacious when the road is removed from the equation. This private fly-in safari takes you from Nairobi straight into the Mara, where the first tyre tracks may already cross lion country. Two nights are used with intent: one arrival drive, one unhurried full day and one last dawn in the grass before you fly home.
Why this journey works
The itinerary is short, but it is not rushed. Scheduled flights protect your time, while a well-located camp and one private vehicle let the guide respond to weather, light and animal movement instead of following a fixed circuit.
Journey at a glance
- Two focused nights in the Maasai Mara with no long road transfer
- Private vehicle and guide, normally limited to about four guests per Land Cruiser
- Predator country, riverine woodland and far-reaching grasslands
- Camp selected for the wildlife area, guiding standard and atmosphere you want
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1 — Nairobi to the Maasai Mara: the first tracks in the grass
Meet our representative at Wilson Airport and board a scheduled light-aircraft flight west over the Great Rift Valley. The Mara reveals itself from the air as a mosaic of plains, drainage lines and dark riverine forest. Your guide meets you beside the aircraft and the transfer to camp becomes your first game drive: giraffe may stand above the croton, elephant families move between shade and water, and raptors hold the thermals. After lunch and a proper pause, return to the plains as the heat softens. This is the time to read tracks, listen for alarm calls and follow the evening light rather than race through a checklist. Sundowners are taken only where regulations and the day’s positioning allow, followed by dinner and your first night under the Mara sky.
Day 2 — A full day shaped by wildlife, not a clock
Leave before sunrise with hot drinks and cameras ready. Cool air often keeps lions and hyenas active, while cheetahs may use termite mounds to scan the grass. Your guide decides whether to return for a late breakfast or carry a picnic and stay with a promising sighting. The middle hours are valuable too: elephants gather in riverine shade, hippos surface in pools and the open plains reveal the scale of the ecosystem. Rather than chase radio calls, we position patiently and give animal behaviour room to unfold. Later, work the softer light along watercourses and woodland edges, where leopard, lion and smaller nocturnal species may begin to stir. Wildlife is never guaranteed; the quality comes from good fieldcraft, time and a guide who knows when to wait.
Day 3 — One last Mara morning and flight to Nairobi
Wake to canvas, birdsong and the cool breath of the plains. A final early drive is paced around what the night has left behind: fresh tracks, hyena returning to a den, lion moving away from an overnight kill or simply herds grazing in clean morning light. Return for breakfast, then transfer to the airstrip with time allowed for any encounter along the way. Fly by scheduled service to Wilson Airport, where the safari ends or an onward transfer can be arranged. You leave with fewer hours spent in traffic and more of the Mara in memory.
Your safari rhythm
Expect early starts while the plains are cool, a slower middle of the day, and late-afternoon drives when colour returns to the grass. If a sighting begins to develop, the day can stretch around it.
Transport and timing
Scheduled flights operate between Wilson Airport and selected Mara airstrips. Exact routings and luggage limits are confirmed for your dates; camp transfers are coordinated with the flight rather than treated as separate sightseeing time.
Road times are approximate and can change with traffic, weather and road conditions. Scheduled flight times and routing are reconfirmed for your travel dates. If an airline changes its timetable, we adjust the operating plan while preserving the journey’s essential character.
Accommodation approach
We match the route to well-run camps and lodges in the right wildlife area—not simply the most familiar name. Your proposal can be shaped around intimate tented camps, family rooms or a more luxurious stay, subject to availability and the season.
