An eight-day Kilembe Trail expedition through the Rwenzori’s southern valleys to Margherita Peak. The route climbs from forest and waterfalls through Mutinda and Bugata to Bamwanjara Pass, Margherita Camp and the Stanley Glacier, then returns through Oliver’s Pass and Kiharo.
Journey at a glance
- Eight days and seven nights on the Kilembe Trail
- Starts and ends at Kilembe near Kasese
- Margherita Peak objective: 5,109 m
- High points include Mutinda Lookout, Bamwanjara Pass and Oliver’s Pass
- Technical glacier crossing and long summit day
Day 1 — Kilembe to Sine Camp
Meet the crew, complete registration and climb from the Kilembe valley through dense montane forest. Pass waterfalls and reach Sine Camp near 2,596 m after approximately four to five hours.
Day 2 — Sine to Mutinda Camp
Climb through bamboo and giant heather towards Mutinda Camp around 3,588 m. When weather, time and health allow, an acclimatisation walk towards Mutinda Lookout adds useful height before returning lower to sleep.

Day 3 — Mutinda to Bugata Camp
Continue into the Afro-alpine zone through bog, tussock grass, giant lobelias and groundsels. Bugata Camp stands near 4,062 m in an exposed upper valley.
Day 4 — Bugata to Hunwick’s via Bamwanjara Pass
Cross Bamwanjara Pass around 4,450 m and descend to Hunwick’s Camp near 3,974 m. The high crossing followed by a lower sleep is useful acclimatisation, but weather can make the day slow and cold.
Day 5 — Hunwick’s to Margherita Camp
Move past the upper lakes and rock systems towards Margherita Camp around 4,485 m. Prepare technical equipment, eat early and rest before the pre-dawn start.
Day 6 — Margherita Peak attempt and return to Hunwick’s
Leave in darkness and follow the guide’s rope system across rock, moraine and glacier. Continue towards Margherita Peak only while weather, health, time and surface conditions remain acceptable. Descend to Margherita Camp, then continue to Hunwick’s for a long recovery night.
Day 7 — Hunwick’s to Kiharo via Oliver’s Pass
Climb through Oliver’s Pass, move beneath the upper peaks and descend towards the warmer Kiharo valley. Wet slabs, roots and bog still require controlled movement after summit day.
Day 8 — Kiharo to Kilembe
Follow the Nyamwamba valley through forest and waterfalls to the trailhead. Complete the crew farewell and transfer to Kasese if included.

Frequently asked questions
How does Kilembe differ from the Central Circuit?
Kilembe approaches from the south, uses a different hut network and crosses Bamwanjara and Oliver’s passes. It provides a longer acclimatisation arc and a distinct set of valleys and waterfalls.
Is Margherita Peak guaranteed?
No. The guide may turn the group around because of altitude symptoms, weather, ice, rockfall risk, pace or equipment concerns. A safe return is the first objective.
