A five-day non-summit Rwenzori trek from Nyakalengija into the Bujuku Valley. This is the right introduction for travellers who want the mountain’s forest, bamboo, giant heather, bogs and high lakes without committing to the technical glacier crossing on Margherita Peak.

Day 1 — Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba Hut
Complete registration and meet the mountain crew before climbing from cultivated foothills into montane forest. The path is often wet and rooty. Settle at Nyabitaba Hut around 2,652 m after roughly five to six hours on the trail.
Day 2 — Nyabitaba to John Matte Hut
Descend to the Kurt Schaffer Bridge, cross the river system and climb through bamboo and giant heather. The day is long, frequently muddy and more demanding than its distance suggests. John Matte Hut sits near 3,420 m beside the Bujuku River.
Day 3 — Lake Bujuku and return to John Matte
Cross the Lower and Upper Bigo bogs using boardwalks and careful footwork. Giant lobelias and groundsels dominate the high valley. Continue towards Lake Bujuku and Bujuku Hut at about 3,962 m when weather, pace and health allow, then return to John Matte. This is the longest day, and the turnaround time is set by the guide.
Day 4 — John Matte to Nyabitaba
Retrace the river, bamboo and bridge sections to Nyabitaba. Descending wet roots and rock requires as much concentration as the ascent, so the group keeps a controlled pace.
Day 5 — Nyabitaba to Nyakalengija
Descend through forest to the park offices, complete the crew farewell and transfer to Kasese if included in your confirmed arrangements.
