The classic seven-day Rwenzori Central Circuit from Nyakalengija through Nyabitaba, John Matte, Bujuku, Elena, Kitandara and Guy Yeoman, with a carefully managed attempt on Margherita Peak. One additional lower-mountain night makes this a more credible summit itinerary than the compressed six-day programme.

Day 1 — Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba Hut
Register, meet the crew and climb through cultivated foothills into montane forest. The first night near 2,652 m gives the body time to begin adapting before the larger gains above the river.
Day 2 — Nyabitaba to John Matte Hut
Cross the Kurt Schaffer Bridge and climb through bamboo, roots, rock and giant heather to John Matte Hut near 3,420 m.
Day 3 — John Matte to Bujuku Hut
Move through the Lower and Upper Bigo bogs and alongside the Bujuku River. Giant lobelias, groundsels and cloud transform the valley as the route reaches Bujuku Hut near 3,962 m.
Day 4 — Bujuku to Elena Hut
Climb towards Scott-Elliot Pass and take the exposed branch to Elena Hut. The guide fits technical equipment and reviews the summit route, weather and turnaround rules.
Day 5 — Margherita Peak attempt and Kitandara
Start before dawn and follow the guide’s rope system across mixed rock, moraine and glacier terrain. Continue to 5,109 m only if health, weather, time and surface conditions remain acceptable. Descend to Elena, cross towards Scott-Elliot Pass and continue to Kitandara Hut.
Day 6 — Kitandara to Guy Yeoman
Climb to Freshfield Pass, look west towards the Congo when cloud allows and descend carefully through bog and rock to Guy Yeoman Hut.
Day 7 — Guy Yeoman to Nyakalengija
Descend through the heather and forest zones, pass Nyabitaba and complete the expedition at the park offices.

Frequently asked questions
Is seven days enough?
It is the established Central Circuit summit rhythm, but it remains demanding. Extra acclimatisation before the trek or a longer mountain programme improves margin.
Do I need climbing experience?
Previous glacier experience is useful but not always required. You must be fit, able to follow rope instructions and comfortable continuing through mud, cold and long mountain days.
