This is Wilderness Alternative Expedition’s defining Uganda journey: eight serious days in the Rwenzori, followed by recovery and a sector-correct gorilla experience in Bwindi. Fourteen days protect the mountain programme, the crew and the guest. The itinerary does not turn the descent from Margherita Peak into a race for the forest.

Why fourteen days?
A thirteen-day programme is possible, but it makes the transition from the mountain to Bwindi too functional. Fourteen days create a recovery night after the descent, a considered transfer to the correct gorilla sector, and one quiet day after tracking before the return flight. That extra space matters after eight wet, technical and physically demanding mountain days.
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1 — Arrive in Entebbe
Meet the Wilderness Alternative representative at Entebbe International Airport and transfer to a comfortable hotel. The day is intentionally light. Rest after the international journey and complete an initial equipment check without placing a long domestic transfer after your flight.
Day 2 — Entebbe to Kilembe and expedition preparation
Travel west with a private driver-guide through Uganda’s changing highland landscape to Kasese and Kilembe. The final road plan is chosen around arrival time and current conditions. At the trailhead lodge, meet the mountain team, review technical equipment and repack so that personal loads, porter loads and safety equipment are properly organised before the climb.
Day 3 — Kilembe to Sine Camp
Begin in the montane forest above Kilembe. The trail climbs steadily past rivers and waterfalls towards Sine Camp. This is the first acclimatisation step rather than a race for altitude; the guide sets a pace that the group can hold in humid forest conditions.
Day 4 — Sine Camp to Mutinda Camp
Move through bamboo and giant-heather country as the vegetation becomes stranger and more distinctly Rwenzori. Boardwalks and wet ground are part of the route. Weather and energy permitting, the team may make the additional ascent towards Mutinda Lookout before settling at camp.
Day 5 — Mutinda Camp to Bugata Camp
Climb deeper into the Afro-alpine zone, crossing bogs and passing giant lobelias, groundsels and high tarns. The day is deliberately measured because Bugata lies high enough for altitude symptoms to become important. Hydration, appetite and pace are monitored by the guide.
Day 6 — Bugata Camp to Hunwick’s Camp via Bamwanjara Pass
Cross the Bamwanjara Pass and descend through a landscape of steep ridges, wetlands and glacially carved valleys. In clear conditions the day opens views towards the Mount Stanley massif. Hunwick’s Camp positions the expedition for the final approach while preserving a sensible altitude progression.
Day 7 — Hunwick’s Camp to Margherita Camp
Continue towards the high summit camp beneath Mount Stanley. The terrain is rougher and the air thinner. After arrival, guides inspect technical equipment, explain the glacier sequence and confirm the turnaround plan. Rest early for the pre-dawn start.
Day 8 — Margherita Peak attempt and return to Hunwick’s Camp
Leave before dawn for the route towards the Stanley Plateau and Margherita Peak. Crampons, ropes and other technical equipment are used where current ice and route conditions require them. The summit is never guaranteed: weather, glacier condition, time, fitness and the lead guide’s judgement determine whether the team continues or turns around. After the attempt, descend carefully to Hunwick’s Camp.
Day 9 — Hunwick’s Camp to Kiharo Camp
Descend into warmer and increasingly vegetated country. The day still demands concentration on steep, wet and uneven ground, but altitude pressure begins to ease. Kiharo provides a quieter final mountain night beside the lower valleys.
Day 10 — Kiharo Camp to Kilembe
Complete the descent through forest to the trailhead, where the ground team meets the expedition. Return to the lodge for a hot shower, equipment sorting and a proper recovery meal. No onward safari transfer is scheduled today.
Day 11 — Recovery and transfer towards Bwindi
Begin slowly before travelling south in a private 4×4. The lodge is selected only after the UWA permit sector is confirmed; Rushaga, Nkuringo, Ruhija and Buhoma are not interchangeable. Reach the sector-correct forest lodge with enough time to settle, recover and prepare for tracking.
Day 12 — Gorilla tracking in Bwindi
Attend the UWA briefing and enter the forest with rangers, trackers and an optional porter. Trek duration cannot be predicted because the gorillas move through a large, steep habitat. Once the family is located, follow the ranger’s instructions throughout the permitted viewing period. Return to the lodge for an unhurried afternoon.
Day 13 — A slower day beside Bwindi
Keep a genuine recovery day after the gorilla trek. Depending on sector, energy and interests, choose gentle birding, a responsibly arranged forest-edge walk or a community-led visit. A second gorilla permit or habituation experience can be requested well in advance and is quoted separately.
Day 14 — Bwindi to Entebbe
Transfer to Kisoro or Kihihi according to the confirmed sector and fly to Entebbe. International departures should retain a safe connection buffer; an additional Entebbe night can be added when flight schedules require it.
Price and operating basis
From USD 5,650 per person sharing for two guests. The price combines the complete eight-day Kilembe mountain operation with private road logistics, recovery accommodation, one scheduled domestic flight sector, a premium sector-correct Bwindi lodge and one gorilla permit.

Safety, permits and suitability
This is a strenuous expedition with sustained wet-ground trekking, high altitude and one technical glacier day. Summit participation is subject to the lead guide’s decision. Guests need insurance covering trekking to 5,109 metres, technical mountaineering activity and emergency evacuation. Gorilla permit price, availability and Bwindi sector are reconfirmed before deposit against the current UWA tariff.

Premium pricing supports adequate crew numbers, fair wages, proper food, shelter, technical equipment and realistic porter loads. On the mountain and in Bwindi, the quality of the journey depends on the people who make safe access possible. The final operating plan protects their welfare as deliberately as it protects guest comfort.
