Northern Serengeti near Kogatende, Tanzania

Sayari Camp

Sayari is a northern Serengeti camp with enough substance to remain worthwhile when the river is quiet. Its position near Kogatende gives access to Mara River country and the wider northern plains, while a pool, spa and polished common areas make it comfortable for a longer stay.

Why we would choose it

Sayari suits travellers who want the north in crossing season but do not want to gamble the entire experience on a few minutes at the river. Resident cats, elephant, kopjes and open country give the guide alternatives, and the permanent-camp facilities help families and couples settle for four or five nights.

Kogatende airstrip is close enough to keep transfer time practical. Walking and specialist photographic arrangements may be available according to current conditions and advance booking. We confirm the exact programme rather than assuming every advertised activity operates every day.

The river, responsibly

From roughly July to October, herds often occupy the northern ecosystem. They may cross, wait, turn away or cross more than once. Good guiding holds back from approaches and leaves the animals room to decide. Sayari’s location gives access; it does not create a performance.

The trade-offs

  • Strong Mara River access, but no camp can promise a crossing.
  • More facilities than a small mobile camp, with correspondingly less pared-back atmosphere.
  • The north is remote from Ngorongoro and southern Serengeti; flying often protects time.
  • Outside migration season it can be beautifully quiet, but some travellers may prefer central Serengeti’s denser all-year road network.

How long to stay

Four nights is the minimum we favour in crossing season. Five reduces pressure and allows a day away from the river. Sayari combines well with central Serengeti by road or air, depending on pace and month.
