Why stay here

Kicheche Mara North is for travellers who want the Mara to feel close, quiet and guided with purpose. The camp is set in Acacia Valley above a seasonal stream that forms part of a natural wildlife corridor. It is small enough for the day to remain personal and large enough to run a polished, dependable operation.

Mara North Conservancy gives the camp its real distinction. Tourism numbers are controlled, the land remains open for wildlife and income is linked to agreements with local landowners. The result is not an empty landscape, but a safari area where vehicles can usually position with more patience and less pressure than in the busiest parts of the Reserve.

Setting and safari character

The conservancy covers a broad northern section of the Greater Mara, with open plains, acacia woodland, river lines and escarpment views. Resident predators and plains game make it a year-round area rather than a place that only matters during the main migration months.

Conservancy rules permit experiences that are generally unavailable in the Reserve, including night drives and guided walks under the camp’s operating framework. These should be treated as ways to understand the ecosystem, not as activities to collect. A slow walk reading tracks and plants can add more depth than another rushed vehicle circuit.

Rooms and camp life

The tents are spacious and comfortably finished while retaining the directness of a canvas camp. A family suite makes the property workable for parents who want an intimate camp without separating children into a distant room. The common areas encourage shared meals and conversation, though private arrangements can be discussed when the journey requires them.

The camp’s atmosphere suits guests who appreciate strong guiding more than ornamental luxury. Days are built around wildlife conditions, with the flexibility to stay out longer when a sighting develops.

Best for

Kicheche Mara North is particularly strong for photographers, repeat safari travellers, couples and families comfortable in a true tented camp. It also works for first-time guests who want a conservancy introduction with knowledgeable guiding. Anyone requiring a large spa, multiple restaurants or resort-style facilities should choose a different property.

Access from Nairobi

Mara North Airstrip is the practical fly-in point; the current camp information describes the transfer as approximately thirty minutes, although wildlife and road conditions can alter that. Scheduled light aircraft usually depart from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport, with baggage carried in soft-sided luggage.

A road transfer from Nairobi is possible and can be valuable in a longer private itinerary, but it takes much of the day. We plan the access around the whole route rather than treating flying or driving as automatically superior.

How it combines

Pair Kicheche Mara North with a Reserve camp for access to classic central or western Mara landscapes, or with Angama for the escarpment and Triangle. It can also follow Ol Pejeta or Mount Kenya in a north-to-south Kenyan circuit. Two conservancy camps should only be combined when their geography and style are genuinely different.

Wilderness Alternative note

This is a camp we choose when guiding quality and field time sit above superficial luxury. We plan private vehicles for serious photographers where budget allows, keep the daily programme flexible and use the conservancy’s lower density to wait for behaviour rather than driving from one species to the next.
