Planning a Maasai Mara safari
Arrival method, area and camp must work as one plan.
A short flight can protect safari time. A road journey can add landscape and context. Neither is automatically better.
Travel by road
Road transfers from Nairobi take a substantial part of the day and vary with traffic, route and weather. They can suit travellers who want a gradual transition, are combining stops, or prefer to keep luggage arrangements simple. The final approach to some camps may be rough.
Fly to the Mara
Scheduled bush flights are quicker and use several airstrips across the ecosystem. The correct strip depends on the camp, and luggage limits, soft-bag rules, timings and possible stops must be confirmed for the actual service.
Do not choose the flight first. Choose the Mara sector and camp, then book the airstrip that serves them sensibly.

Shared or private vehicle
Control over time is a defining safari luxury.
Shared drives reduce cost and can be sociable. They also require compromise on departure time, subjects and how long the vehicle remains at a sighting.
A private vehicle is strongly recommended for serious photographers, families with young children, travellers with mobility considerations and anyone who prefers slow observation. Confirm whether private use is included, optional or mandatory for the booking size.
Hot-air balloon safari
A dawn perspective, governed by wind.
Balloon flights usually begin very early and follow the wind rather than a fixed route. They can offer an extraordinary view of grassland patterns, rivers and moving herds, but wildlife encounters vary and landing conditions are part of the adventure.
Weight, age, mobility, pregnancy and weather restrictions can apply. The flight is operated by specialist companies and may be cancelled for safety. We confirm the operator’s current rules and refund terms before booking.

Family safari design
Shorter driving blocks
Use a private vehicle and keep room for rest, the pool and spontaneous stops.
Camp layout
Understand family tent connections, escort rules, meal timing and distance to shared areas.
Guide fit
A guide who invites questions and makes tracks, insects, birds and landscape interesting transforms a child’s safari.
Build a wider Kenya journey
The Mara combines naturally with contrast.
Mount Kenya
Move from predator-rich plains to forest, moorland and high alpine country. Trekking needs its own acclimatisation and recovery time.
Explore Mount Kenya →Kenyan coast
Finish with warm water, rest and Swahili coastal culture. Flight routing should be designed before camps are confirmed.
Private conservancies elsewhere
Add northern or Laikipia landscapes for walking, community conservation and species not commonly seen in the Mara.
Preparation checklist
- Neutral, comfortable layers for cool dawns and warm afternoons.
- Sun protection, refillable bottle and personal medication.
- Soft-sided luggage if flying; confirm the actual allowance.
- Binoculars for each interested traveller where possible.
- Camera batteries, storage and dust protection.
- Travel insurance that covers the full itinerary and activities.
- Respectful clothing and permission-led photography for community visits.
