The southern location can be rewarding for resident wildlife and, in some years, for the early arrival or late departure of migrating herds. Those movements are driven by rain and grazing and are never guaranteed.
Setting and safari character
The Sand River area feels different from the busier central Reserve. Riverine trees cut through open country, and the Tanzania border lies close by. Drives can explore the southern plains and follow wildlife movement without beginning every day in the same well-known sectors.
The location is not the most efficient base for the Mara Triangle or northern Musiara. Travellers who want those areas should combine camps or choose a different base rather than spend valuable light hours crossing the Reserve.

Access from Nairobi
The appropriate light-aircraft arrival point depends on current flight operation and camp logistics in the southern Mara. We confirm the exact airstrip and road transfer before booking. Guests connecting from an international flight need time to move between Jomo Kenyatta and Wilson airports unless a direct service is available on that date.
A road transfer is possible but lengthy. It can work in a private overland itinerary through the Rift Valley, while flying is generally better for a short luxury stay.
How it combines
Sala’s combines well with Mara North, Naboisho or the Mara Triangle because each adds a distinct landscape and management model. It can also form the Kenyan side of a cross-border safari, subject to current immigration, vehicle and air arrangements. A coast extension offers an easy final stage for families or couples.

We use Sala’s for guests who will appreciate the southern Mara rather than judge it by distance from the most photographed crossings.
