Why stay here
Lobolo Camp is chosen not only for where guests sleep but for what can be organised from it. Set on the western shore of Lake Turkana among springs and doum palms, it functions as both a small tented camp and an operational base for longer exploration by road, boat and mobile fly camp.
That distinction is important. A traveller wanting two restful nights beside the water may be equally happy at Eliye Springs. Lobolo becomes especially valuable when the itinerary continues across the lake, towards archaeological landscapes, or into country where a fixed lodge no longer exists.
Setting and camp character
The name Lobolo is associated locally with abundant water, and the springs create an oasis-like pocket against the otherwise dry western shore. Doum palms, open water and the far horizon define the camp. The altitude is low, the climate can be intensely hot and windy, and the lake is never a passive backdrop.
The camp has a strong expedition identity. It is comfortable enough to recover properly, but it does not conceal the remoteness with unnecessary polish. The sounds of wind, birds and water remain present, and operational decisions are shaped by temperature, lake conditions and distance.
Tents and camp life
Eight elevated tents face the lake and horizon. Each has an ensuite shower and toilet area and is positioned to make use of the breeze. The raised design improves outlook and helps separate the room from the ground, while the small number of tents keeps the camp personal.
Meals are served in an open-sided dining tent and can be adjusted for normal dietary requirements with advance notice. Electricity is primarily generator-supported, with charging provision in the tents. Phone signal is intermittent and the camp states that Wi-Fi is not available, so guests should plan to be offline.
Expedition capability
Lobolo maintains vehicles, boats and mobile-camp equipment for journeys around the lake. The fly camp uses proper stand-in tents, beds, bedding, wash arrangements, dining and kitchen shelter rather than reducing a remote night to improvised camping. This can unlock Central Island, Sibiloi, Koobi Fora and other sectors when the full route, permissions and field support are in place.
Boat travel on Lake Turkana must never be promised casually. Strong winds and rapidly changing conditions can alter or cancel a movement. The craft, crew, fuel, safety equipment, park arrangements and contingency are confirmed as one plan, with road or schedule alternatives where practical.
Best for
Lobolo is strongest for experienced travellers, photographers, natural-history groups, private families with older children and anyone undertaking a serious Lake Turkana expedition. It is also a compelling two-night stay for guests who appreciate small camps and do not require constant digital connection.
It is not the best fit for travellers expecting air conditioning, resort entertainment or a tightly timed schedule. The quality here lies in field capability, knowledge and access rather than in conventional hotel infrastructure.
Getting there
Access is normally planned through Lodwar and the western shore, by private 4×4 or charter arrangement. The camp can also sit within a longer overland route from Samburu and South Turkana. Exact transfer time depends on the starting point, road condition, weather and stops required for the expedition.
For a trans-lake or northern circuit, arrival at Lobolo is only one element of a larger logistics plan. Wilderness Alternative confirms fuel range, vehicle support, boat availability, park permissions, water, communications and realistic daylight margins before a guest-facing itinerary is issued.
What to combine it with
A western-shore sequence can pair Lobolo with Eliye Springs, giving one relaxed resort stay and one more specialised expedition base. Longer journeys may continue to Central Island, Sibiloi and Koobi Fora, but these should be built as a coherent route rather than sold as a collection of isolated excursions.
Southbound connections through Desert Rose, Namunyak or Samburu create one of Kenya’s most dramatic changes of landscape. Loiyangalani and the eastern shore may be included when the lake crossing or road circuit is operationally sound.
