Mara Naboisho Conservancy, Greater Maasai Mara

Encounter Mara

A secluded ten-tent camp in Naboisho Conservancy, offering a quiet bush atmosphere, family options and close access to the conservancy’s resident wildlife.

Why stay here

Encounter Mara is the quieter, more tucked-away expression of a Naboisho safari. The camp sits within the conservancy rather than on its busy edge, giving guests the feeling of returning to a private pocket of bush after each drive. Its scale remains intimate while offering enough structure for families and first-time visitors.

The property is seasonal and has traditionally closed in May. We check current opening dates before confirming a journey rather than assuming year-round operation.

Setting and safari character

Mara Naboisho is a substantial part of the northern Mara ecosystem, with plains, acacia country and seasonal watercourses. Lion, cheetah, leopard, elephant and plains game use the area throughout the year, although sightings remain natural events and no species can be scheduled.

Low guest density allows guides to work a sighting patiently. Night drives and walks may be possible under conservancy rules, adding nocturnal wildlife and smaller ecological details to the familiar daytime safari.

Rooms and camp life

Encounter Mara has ten tents, including two family tents. The camp is comfortable but retains a traditional safari tone: canvas walls, natural sounds and communal spaces designed around the day in the field rather than a resort programme.

It suits travellers who enjoy warm hosting and a sense of seclusion more than overt glamour. Time between drives is quiet, and the camp’s relationship with its immediate setting is one of its strongest qualities.

Best for

Choose Encounter Mara for couples, small groups and families with children aged five and above under the current policy. It is a good match for travellers who want a more intimate camp than a large lodge but still value a professional, established operator. Guests wanting a pool or a broad menu of lodge facilities may prefer Naboisho Camp.

Access from Nairobi

Mara Ol Seki Airstrip is the normal fly-in point, with current information indicating a transfer of roughly forty-five minutes. We confirm exact timing and flight operation for the travel date. The transfer itself is a first game drive, so it should not be judged like an airport shuttle.

Driving from Nairobi can be built into a private overland itinerary. For a two- or three-night Mara stay, flying usually avoids sacrificing much of the first and last day.

How it combines

Encounter Mara works well after the Mara Triangle or a Reserve camp, adding conservancy freedom and a quieter camp rhythm. It also combines with Laikipia or Samburu when the itinerary is designed around contrasting landscapes. We avoid pairing it with another very similar Naboisho camp unless the party has a specific logistical reason.

Wilderness Alternative note

This camp is chosen for atmosphere as much as facilities. We keep the programme responsive, advise a private vehicle where independence matters and use Naboisho’s night-driving and walking possibilities thoughtfully rather than filling every hour.
