Oloololo Escarpment, Greater Maasai Mara

Angama Mara

A design-led lodge high on the Oloololo Escarpment, chosen for immense Mara views, unhurried private space and quick access down into the Mara Triangle.

Why stay here

Angama Mara earns its place in a serious Mara itinerary through geography. The lodge sits high on the Oloololo Escarpment, roughly a thousand feet above the plains, with the Mara spread below rather than hidden behind a wall of bush. It is a setting that allows a traveller to understand the scale of the ecosystem before the first game drive begins.

This is an excellent choice for guests who want refined accommodation without becoming detached from the landscape. The mood is spacious and quietly contemporary, but the central experience is still the view: weather travelling over the plains, balloons lifting in the distance and evening light changing the escarpment edge.

Setting and safari character

The escarpment position is different from sleeping inside the Reserve or on a conservancy. Drives descend from the lodge into the Mara Triangle, the western section of the Maasai Mara managed separately from the main Reserve. The Triangle is known for broad grassland, the Mara River and comparatively clear sightlines, while the escarpment gives the lodge a sense of distance and calm after a full day out.

The descent and ascent are part of the daily rhythm, so this is not the choice for someone who wants wildlife moving directly between tents at all hours. It is for travellers who value perspective, comfort and a strong base from which to make well-planned Triangle drives rather than trying to cover the whole Mara in one hurried day.

Rooms and lodge life

The guest areas and suites are arranged to keep the plains in view. Floor-to-ceiling glass, private decks and generous interiors create a lodge experience suited to longer stays, special journeys and travellers who appreciate good design. The property also has facilities that support time between drives, including a photography studio and spaces for slow meals and private downtime.

Angama works particularly well when the itinerary allows at least three nights. That gives the guide room to respond to weather, animal movement and river conditions instead of treating the Mara as a checklist.

Best for

Choose Angama for couples, photographers, private groups and families wanting an elevated, high-comfort base with a strong sense of place. It also suits first-time visitors who want help reading the landscape before going deeper. Travellers who want the most intimate canvas-camp atmosphere, or who prefer to hear animals immediately outside a tent, may be happier combining it with a small conservancy camp.

Access from Nairobi

The usual approach is by light aircraft from Nairobi into the western Mara, followed by a lodge transfer. Exact airstrip choice and timing depend on the day’s operating schedule, baggage limits and the wider itinerary, so we confirm the current routing rather than fixing a flight time in advance. A road journey is possible, but it is long and should be chosen for a reason—usually a wider overland circuit—not simply to save time.

For most short safaris, flying protects time in the Mara. For a private photographic journey with several Kenyan landscapes, driving can make sense because the vehicle and guide remain continuous throughout.

How it combines

Angama combines naturally with a small camp in Mara North, Naboisho or Olare Motorogi. The contrast is useful: first the escarpment and Triangle, then low-density conservancy driving, night drives and walks where permitted. It also works after Mount Kenya or Laikipia, and before a beach stay on the Kenyan coast when the itinerary needs a calm, polished finish.

Wilderness Alternative note

We use Angama when the escarpment genuinely improves the journey, not simply because it is a famous address. A well-built stay includes an early start into the Triangle, time for photography in softer light and enough space in the programme to remain with a good sighting. We will also advise honestly when a smaller camp is a better fit for the guest’s priorities.
