Why stay here
Sarara Camp belongs to a different northern journey from a conventional Samburu Reserve safari. It lies in Namunyak Community Conservancy beneath the Mathews Range, within a vast, community-managed landscape where wildlife, livestock, forest and seasonal water must coexist.
Guests choose Sarara to spend time in that whole system. Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, guided walking, horseback exploration, game drives and Samburu pastoral traditions give the stay depth, while the mountains provide a dramatic physical setting that no riverside Reserve camp can reproduce.
Setting and safari character
The Mathews Range rises abruptly from dry plains, collecting moisture and supporting forest, springs and exceptional botanical diversity. Namunyak spreads across the country below it. Wildlife is genuinely wild and often more dispersed than in a small national reserve; the experience rewards tracking, observation and patience.
The camp’s waterhole can bring elephants and other animals close to the pool area, but no sighting is guaranteed. The landscape and community conservation model remain worthwhile even on a quiet wildlife day.
Tents and camp life
Six ensuite tents are arranged for broad views and privacy, while Sarara House can provide an exclusive-use option for a family or group. The natural-rock swimming pool overlooks the waterhole and has become part of the camp’s visual identity, but it is the unforced relationship between camp and land that gives the property character.
Hosting is personal and days are flexible. Walks, drives, riding and cultural experiences are planned according to weather, guest ability and local circumstances rather than sold as a fixed checklist.
Conservation and community
Namunyak is community land, and tourism supports local employment, habitat protection and community priorities. Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, the first community-owned elephant sanctuary in Africa, is a central part of the wider conservation story. Visits must respect animal welfare and the sanctuary’s operational needs.
Experiences connected with Samburu traditions should be approached through established community relationships. The aim is conversation and context, not a staged interruption to people’s daily lives.
Best for
Sarara is exceptional for repeat safari travellers, active families, conservation-minded guests, walkers and private groups wanting a remote northern experience. It also suits photographers who value landscape and human context alongside wildlife. Guests seeking dense big-game viewing on every drive should combine it with Samburu National Reserve rather than replacing the Reserve entirely.
Getting there
The most direct premium access is a private or shared charter to the Namunyak area, followed by a short camp transfer. Scheduled services may instead use Kalama or a central Kenya airstrip and require a much longer 4×4 transfer. The best solution depends on group size, season, aircraft availability and the surrounding itinerary.
Driving from Samburu, Lewa or Nanyuki can turn the transfer into an expedition through changing northern country, but it is long and road conditions matter. Wilderness Alternative plans fuel, water, vehicle and daylight conservatively; this is not a transfer to improvise after arrival.
What to combine it with
Sarara works beautifully after a riverside Samburu camp, creating a progression from concentrated Reserve game viewing to mountains and community conservation. Desert Rose or Lake Turkana can extend the expedition farther north, while Ol Pejeta and Lewa provide practical southern links.
Wilderness Alternative note
We use Sarara when the guest wants Northern Kenya itself, not simply another list of mammals. We allow enough nights for a walk, Reteti and time in camp without compressing them around two daily drives.
