The house is designed for exclusive use and lies within walking distance of Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, giving a family or group unusual flexibility around sanctuary visits, meals, guiding and downtime.
Privacy is the reason to choose it—not separation from the local story. The strongest stays connect the household rhythm with the work of Reteti, the scale of Namunyak and the people responsible for protecting the landscape.
Setting and safari character
The property stands in dry northern country below the Mathews Range. Wildlife is free-ranging and sightings are less predictable than along the Ewaso Nyiro, while access to Reteti gives the stay a focused conservation purpose.
Private game drives, walks and wider Sarara experiences can be arranged according to current conditions. The programme is best built for the group rather than copied from a daily camp timetable.
Rooms and private-house life
Current official information presents a combination of standalone suites, family accommodation and generous shared spaces for groups of up to sixteen. Exclusive use allows meals, children’s schedules and field time to be adjusted without affecting other guests.
The house is therefore particularly valuable for multi-generational travel, groups of friends and specialist departures. It is not necessary for a couple unless privacy and the Reteti location are overriding priorities.
Conservation and community
Reteti Elephant Sanctuary is community owned and led. Its keepers care for orphaned and abandoned elephant calves with the aim, where possible, of returning them to the wild. A visit should be approached as a conservation experience governed by animal welfare, not guaranteed close contact.
Tourism income supports employment and the wider Namunyak model. We explain that relationship clearly and avoid portraying the sanctuary as a private attraction belonging to the house.
Best for
Reteti House is strongest for private families, multi-generational groups, conservation-focused travellers and small specialist parties. It gives children and adults room to move at their own pace. Travellers prioritising a sociable camp atmosphere or daily high-density game viewing may be happier elsewhere.
Getting there
Charter access into Namunyak is normally the most efficient solution for an exclusive group and can be cost-effective when the aircraft is shared among several guests. Scheduled flights to the Samburu or Laikipia region require a longer 4×4 transfer, while an overland expedition needs careful daylight, vehicle and fuel planning.
We quote the routing as part of the whole private journey, not as an isolated airport transfer. Group size, luggage, season and the next destination all change the sensible answer.
What to combine it with
Reteti House pairs well with a small camp inside Samburu National Reserve, a Laikipia conservancy or a private charter onward to the Mara. More adventurous groups can continue towards Desert Rose and Lake Turkana with a properly equipped expedition vehicle.
