Ol Kinyei Conservancy, Greater Maasai Mara

Porini Mara Camp

A small solar-powered eco-camp in community-owned Ol Kinyei Conservancy, built for low vehicle density, Maasai guiding and a light physical footprint on the land.

Why stay here

Porini Mara Camp offers one of the clearest examples of the community-conservancy model in the Greater Mara. It is deliberately small, with five guest tents and a family tent, and sits in Ol Kinyei Conservancy—land leased from Maasai owners and set aside for wildlife and low-impact tourism.

The camp should be chosen for its guiding, low density and conservation structure rather than for conventional luxury. Solar power, non-permanent construction and limited guest numbers keep the operation light on the landscape.

Setting and safari character

Ol Kinyei covers approximately 18,700 acres of savannah, woodland and riverine habitat. Tourism access is tightly controlled, and the camp also has access to neighbouring Naboisho under current operating arrangements. The area supports resident predators, elephants, giraffes and plains game, with seasonal movements of the Loita wildebeest adding another rhythm early in the year.

Day and night drives, guided walks, bush meals and sundowners are led by KPSGA-certified Maasai guides and spotters. The most important benefit is not the length of the activity list but the ability to observe wildlife without a crowd of vehicles.

Rooms and camp life

The six tents are spacious, comfortable and ensuite, with solar lighting and private verandas. The feel is classic rather than ornate. Shared meals and close interaction with the guiding team give the stay a personal quality that larger properties struggle to reproduce.

Wi-Fi is available in the lounge area, but this is a camp for travellers happy to disconnect. The physical footprint is intentionally modest: if removed, the site is designed to be reclaimed by the bush.

Best for

Porini Mara suits conservation-minded travellers, photographers, couples and families comfortable with an authentic small camp. It is also a strong value choice for guests who prioritise private wilderness and expert guiding over pools and spas. Anyone expecting a polished resort or elaborate suite should choose another property.

Access from Nairobi

Ol Seki Airstrip is the usual fly-in access, with transfers included under current camp arrangements. Scheduled light aircraft may operate from Wilson Airport and, on selected services, from the international airport; the exact routing is checked for the travel date. Soft baggage limits apply.

The drive from Nairobi is possible and official information estimates roughly four hours in favourable conditions, but traffic, weather and road state can extend it. We describe the journey honestly and choose the approach that fits the wider route.

How it combines

Porini Mara can follow a Reserve camp or Mara Triangle lodge to add low-density conservancy guiding. It also fits well after Porini Rhino Camp in Ol Pejeta for travellers interested in a consistent conservation model across two ecosystems. A coast extension creates an easy contrast after a simple, field-focused safari.

Wilderness Alternative note

We use Porini Mara for guests who will appreciate what the camp is protecting. The story of land leases, local employment and limited visitor numbers belongs in the guiding, not as a marketing paragraph detached from the safari. We plan enough time for guests to see how the model works on the ground.
