A private nine-day Kilimanjaro expedition using the Lemosho approach, Shira Plateau and quieter northern traverse before a School Hut summit attempt and Mweka descent.
The Northern Circuit is Kilimanjaro’s longest established ascent and its most complete journey around Kibo. It begins through western forest, crosses Shira and then turns away from the busier southern circuit for several days on the mountain’s northern flank. Nine mountain days sit within an eleven-day, ten-night programme with a Moshi lodge night before and after the climb.

Why choose the nine-day Northern Circuit?
This route is for climbers who value time, quieter trail days and a sense of travelling around the mountain rather than moving directly towards the summit. Multiple days at intermediate altitude create a strong acclimatisation margin, while the northern landscape gives changing views of Kibo, Mawenzi and the Kenyan plains. The extra days require more crew time and camp logistics; this is a distinct expedition, not simply a luxury Lemosho.

Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1 — Arrive in Moshi
Transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport as arranged and settle into the Moshi lodge. The lead guide reviews the remote circuit, camp sequence, symptoms, equipment, duffel limits and summit plan.
Day 2 — Lemosho trailhead to Mti Mkubwa
Register on the western side, continue to the trailhead and begin in dense rainforest. A short, deliberately slow stage leads to Mti Mkubwa, or Big Tree Camp.
Day 3 — Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1
Climb from forest into heather and moorland to the broad Shira Plateau. Kibo rises across the eroded caldera when visibility opens.
Day 4 — Shira 1 to Shira 2
Traverse exposed volcanic ground at a steady pace. The second plateau day gives the body more time at an intermediate altitude before the route turns north.
Day 5 — Shira 2 to Moir Hut
Leave the southern line for Moir beneath the Lent Hills. Colder, drier terrain and a quieter camp mark the beginning of the northern circuit.
Day 6 — Moir Hut to Pofu Camp
Climb out of the Moir Valley and bend around Kibo’s north-western flank. An optional Lent Hills movement depends on health and conditions. Repeated valleys make the day more physical than its net height gain suggests.
Day 7 — Pofu to Third Cave
Continue east through sparse high-altitude country. The Kenyan plains lie far below and Mawenzi becomes more prominent ahead. This remote stage is exposed and rarely as level as it appears on a map.
Day 8 — Third Cave to School Hut
Gain the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, then reach School Hut. Eat, rest, organise warm layers and water, and complete the guide’s final health and weather checks.
Day 9 — Gilman’s Point, Uhuru Peak and Mweka
Start in darkness towards Gilman’s Point on the eastern crater rim. Continue to Uhuru Peak when health, time and conditions permit, then descend across to Stella Point, Barafu and Mweka Camp. The large change in altitude makes this a demanding day long after the summit.
Day 10 — Mweka Gate and Moshi
Descend through forest, complete park formalities and hold the crew farewell before returning to Moshi for the included post-climb lodge night.
Day 11 — Departure or onward Tanzania journey
Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport or continue into a separately arranged safari or coast itinerary.

Is the Northern Circuit right for you?
Choose this route if you can commit to the extra time and want Kilimanjaro’s broadest standard trekking journey. It is not technical, but nine consecutive mountain days, remote camps, cold and a very long summit descent still demand training and disciplined pacing. More days improve the acclimatisation pattern; they do not guarantee a summit.
Read the complete Northern Circuit guide, then use the packing list, training guide, altitude guide and summit-night guide.
