A seven-day wilderness approach from Castle Forest and Kamweti, crossing bamboo, moorland and the high alpine zone before reaching Point Lenana and descending through the Chogoria side of Mount Kenya.
The Kamweti Route is a remote southern approach designed for experienced trekkers who value a quieter, expedition-style journey. It takes more time and logistical support than the mountain’s principal routes. The programme begins at Castle Forest Lodge, moves through Upper Kamweti and the Sagana and Thego camps, then joins the upper mountain near Mackinder’s Camp. After Point Lenana, the route descends through Minto’s and the Chogoria side.
Remote-route access and trail conditions can change. Final routing is confirmed for each departure with the park and local mountain team; safety and current access take precedence over a fixed line on the map.
Read the complete Kamweti Route guide, compare the Chogoria descent, and review the Point Lenana and Mount Kenya planning pages before departure.

Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1 — Nairobi to Castle Forest Lodge (2,300 m)
Depart Nairobi for Mount Kenya and arrive at Castle Forest Lodge for dinner and overnight. Spend the afternoon at the lodge, with time for a gentle bird walk along the nature trails if conditions allow. This easy opening day provides a useful transition before the remote trek begins.
Day 2 — Castle Forest Lodge to Upper Kamweti Rest House (2,600 m)
After breakfast, leave the lodge and walk to Upper Kamweti Rest House. The day covers approximately 10 km and takes around two hours of walking, depending on trail conditions and the group’s pace. Lunch, dinner and overnight at the rest-house area.
Day 3 — Upper Kamweti to Sagana Campsite (3,650 m)
Continue for approximately 16 km through the bamboo forest towards Sagana Campsite. Lunch is served en route. The rise in altitude is significant, and the team maintains a measured pace with regular hydration and rest stops. Dinner and overnight in camp.
Day 4 — Sagana Campsite to Thego Campsite (4,050 m)
After breakfast, trek approximately 15 km as the vegetation changes from bamboo to giant heath and then open moorland. Arrive at Thego Campsite at about 4,050 m for dinner and overnight. At this height, a slow pace and a calm afternoon are important parts of acclimatisation.
Day 5 — Thego Campsite to Mackinder’s Camp (4,300 m)
Leave Thego for Mackinder’s Camp via Lake Hohnel. The upper route passes distinctive Mount Kenya plants, including water-filled and cabbage lobelias, giant groundsels and other afro-alpine species. Lunch is served en route, followed by dinner and overnight at Mackinder’s Camp.

Day 6 — Point Lenana and descent to Mount Kenya Bandas
Wake at approximately 2:30 am for a light breakfast and begin the summit climb at 3:00 am. Aim to reach Point Lenana at about 6:15 am for sunrise. On an exceptionally clear morning, distant views may extend towards Kilimanjaro, but visibility is never guaranteed. Descend to Minto’s for a full breakfast, then continue to the Mount Kenya Bandas campsite on the Chogoria side for dinner and overnight.

Day 7 — Chogoria to Nairobi
After breakfast, walk approximately 10 km, then meet the 4×4 vehicle for the drive to Chogoria. Stop for lunch before continuing to Nairobi, completing a full south-to-east crossing of Mount Kenya.
