A direct five-day Mount Kenya trek on the Naro Moru Route, climbing from the forest and Met Station to Mackinder’s Camp, then reaching Point Lenana at sunrise before descending the same side of the mountain.
The Naro Moru Route is the shortest and most direct of Mount Kenya’s three principal trekking approaches. This programme suits fit travellers who want a focused Point Lenana climb with a first night near the mountain for acclimatisation. It is a demanding itinerary: the upper mountain is cold, weather changes quickly, and the summit morning is long. Our guide sets a steady pace, monitors the group, and adjusts daily decisions to the conditions on the mountain.
Before choosing this trek, compare the complete Naro Moru Route guide, our guidance for Point Lenana and the practical Mount Kenya planning guide.

Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1 — Nairobi to Naro Moru
Depart Nairobi for Naro Moru town, arriving in time for lunch. Continue to the Youth Hostel area for a quiet afternoon and overnight near the mountain. This first day is deliberately easy, giving you time to organise equipment, meet the mountain team and begin acclimatising before the ascent.
Day 2 — Naro Moru to Met Station
After breakfast, drive to Naro Moru Gate and complete park formalities. Begin the climb through montane forest, covering approximately 10 km to the Meteorological Station. The lower slopes are rich in vegetation and birdlife; wildlife may be present, but every sighting is a privilege rather than a promise. Dinner and overnight at Met Station.
Day 3 — Met Station to Mackinder’s Camp
Continue above the forest and across the open high country. The route passes the radio relay area and enters the Teleki Valley before climbing gradually towards Mackinder’s Camp. The landscape becomes increasingly alpine, with broad views towards the central peaks. Dinner and overnight at Mackinder’s Camp.

Day 4 — Mackinder’s Camp to Point Lenana and Met Station
Wake at approximately 2:30 am for a light breakfast and the pre-dawn summit climb. Ascend via the Austrian Hut area towards Point Lenana, the mountain’s trekking summit at 4,985 m. Weather and trail conditions determine the exact pace. After sunrise and photographs, descend to Mackinder’s Camp for breakfast, then continue down to Met Station for dinner and overnight.

Day 5 — Met Station to Nairobi
After breakfast, complete the final descent through the forest to Naro Moru Gate. Transfer to Naro Moru town, meet the onward vehicle and return to Nairobi.

Preparation and safety
This is a rapid ascent to nearly 5,000 m. Arrive fit, disclose relevant medical information, and carry suitable waterproof, insulated and night-time trekking layers. A summit is never guaranteed: your guide may change the timing or turn a guest around if altitude, weather or trail conditions make that the safer decision. Personal travel insurance should cover high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation.
