A fast six-day Central Circuit expedition to Margherita Peak, the 5,109 m high point of Mount Stanley. It compresses the lower mountain and is suitable only for fit, experienced multi-day trekkers who understand that altitude, mud, glacier conditions and guide judgement may end a summit attempt.
Journey at a glance
- Six days and five nights on the Central Circuit
- Starts and ends at Nyakalengija near Kasese
- Margherita Peak objective: 5,109 m
- Technical glacier section using rope, harness, helmet, ice axe and crampons when conditions require
- A compressed schedule; the seven-day Central Circuit is the better choice for most travellers
Day 1 — Nyakalengija to John Matte Hut
Begin early and pass Nyabitaba before crossing the Kurt Schaffer Bridge and climbing into bamboo and giant heather. The gain to John Matte is substantial, so this schedule assumes strong fitness and recent mountain experience.
Day 2 — John Matte to Bujuku Hut
Cross the Bigo bog system and enter the high Bujuku Valley between Mount Stanley, Mount Speke and Mount Baker. Sleep near 3,962 m and report every altitude symptom promptly.

Day 3 — Bujuku to Elena Hut
Climb towards Scott-Elliot Pass and take the steep branch to Elena Hut on Mount Stanley’s rocky shoulder. The guide checks weather, health and glacier information before confirming the summit plan.
Day 4 — Margherita Peak attempt and Kitandara Hut
Leave before dawn. The route crosses rock, moraine and glacier terrain where the guide controls the rope and equipment system. Margherita Peak is attempted only when conditions and the group’s health allow. Descend past Elena and Scott-Elliot Pass towards the Kitandara Lakes. This can be a twelve- to fourteen-hour day.
Day 5 — Kitandara to Guy Yeoman Hut
Cross Freshfield Pass around 4,282 m before descending through bog and rock towards Guy Yeoman Hut. Wet slabs make the descent technically simple but physically tiring.
Day 6 — Guy Yeoman to Nyakalengija
Make the long final descent through heather and forest, pass Nyabitaba and finish at the park offices.
