Mara Triangle, Maasai Mara

Mara Serena Safari Lodge

The only lodge inside the Mara Triangle: a hilltop base with wide plains views, a swimming pool and the practical facilities many families and first-time safari guests value.

Why stay here

Mara Serena Safari Lodge is the only lodge within the Mara Triangle. That simple fact gives it a practical advantage: guests wake inside the western Mara rather than spending the first part of each drive reaching it. The lodge occupies a hilltop with long views over the plains and towards the Mara River system.

It is a larger lodge, not a small bush camp, and should be chosen with that distinction understood. In return it offers dependable facilities, a swimming pool, a spa and room configurations that are useful for families and multi-generational groups.

Setting and safari character

The Mara Triangle is an open, legible landscape. Grasslands run towards the river and the escarpment, making it particularly rewarding for wide environmental photography and for following animal movement across distance. During migration months, crossings may occur along this western river section, but no camp or lodge can guarantee the place or timing of a crossing.

Outside the busiest weeks, the Triangle remains valuable for resident wildlife and uncluttered vistas. The lodge’s elevated position also makes the transition between game drive and rest feel natural: the ecosystem remains visible from the property.

Rooms and lodge life

The lodge has seventy-four rooms, including a suite and interconnecting options. The architecture is distinctive and the scale means there is more shared activity than at a six- or eight-tent camp. Guests who enjoy a full-service hotel rhythm often find that reassuring, especially on a first safari.

Mara Serena has operated on solar power since 2019, an important operational detail in a property of this size. Between drives, the pool, spa and common areas provide useful options for children, older travellers and anyone taking a slower afternoon.

Best for

This is one of the strongest Mara choices for families, multi-generational travel, larger private parties and first-time visitors who want substantial lodge facilities. It also suits travellers whose priority is direct access to the Mara Triangle. Guests seeking highly personalised hosting, very low guest numbers or walking and night drives should consider adding a conservancy camp.

Access from Nairobi

Light-aircraft services connect Nairobi with the western Mara, and the lodge uses Serena Airstrip for many arrivals. We confirm the current flight, baggage allowance and transfer arrangement for each booking because operating patterns can change. The road journey from Nairobi is possible, but it is a full travel day once traffic and road conditions are considered.

A fly-in stay is usually the efficient choice for a two- or three-night Mara visit. A private road safari becomes more attractive when the Mara is part of a longer Kenyan circuit and the same guide will continue to Naivasha, Nakuru, Laikipia or Amboseli.

How it combines

Mara Serena pairs well with Angama on the escarpment only when there is a specific reason for two western-Mara perspectives. More often, we combine it with Naboisho, Mara North or Olare Motorogi so the second stay adds conservancy activities and lower vehicle density. It is also an easy anchor for a family itinerary that begins in Nairobi and ends on the coast.

Wilderness Alternative note

We recommend Mara Serena for its location and practical strengths, not as an imitation of an intimate tented camp. Our guiding plan leaves early, reads the Triangle as a whole and returns to the lodge when the light is hard, helping guests benefit from both the landscape and the property’s facilities.
