AIR • RAIL • ROAD • BOAT

The best way to reach the Kenyan Coast depends on which coast, where the previous night was spent and how much of the journey you want to see. A fast flight is not always the simplest door-to-door route; a beautiful rail journey does not end at the beach.

Match the gateway to the destination

Mombasa: use Moi International Airport for the broadest air access or Mombasa Terminus at Miritini for the Madaraka Express. Both require onward transport to the island and beach districts.

Diani: Ukunda Airport is usually the cleanest option. Mombasa airport and SGR work when schedules, international arrivals or a city stop justify the additional South Coast road transfer.

Watamu and Malindi: Malindi Airport is the closest scheduled air gateway. Mombasa and its railway terminus involve a substantial northbound transfer.

Lamu: fly to Manda Airport and complete the arrival by pre-arranged boat to Lamu Town, Shela or the property. Boat coordination is part of the booking, not an optional extra.

Nairobi to Mombasa

By air

Flights operate from Nairobi’s principal airports according to airline and route. Jomo Kenyatta handles major domestic and international connections; Wilson is the hub for many safari airlines. They are separate airports across a congested city. Never plan a short connection between them from map distance alone. Check baggage rules: safari aircraft can impose much lower limits than jet services.

By Madaraka Express

Kenya Railways connects Nairobi Terminus at Syokimau with Mombasa Terminus at Miritini. Book through the current official Kenya Railways channel and use the name and identification details required for travel. Timetables and baggage conditions can change, so we confirm them for the date rather than reproducing a permanent schedule.

The railway is comfortable and visually rewarding, crossing open country and parts of the Tsavo ecosystem. It does not run from central Nairobi to central Mombasa. Allow road time to Syokimau before departure and from Miritini after arrival. Diani, North Coast hotels and Old Town all require different onward plans.

By road

Nairobi–Mombasa is a full-day drive influenced by freight traffic, road works and stops. It makes strongest sense as part of a Tsavo journey, where wildlife and landscape turn transfer into itinerary. Driving simply to avoid flying or rail should be weighed against fatigue.

Reaching Diani

Flights to Ukunda place guests close to the resort corridor. Confirm whether the service leaves Jomo Kenyatta or Wilson, how it connects from safari, and the baggage allowance. From Mombasa, the route depends on starting point, traffic and current use of the Likoni channel or Dongo Kundu bypass approaches. There is no honest universal transfer time. Pre-arrange the vehicle and give the driver the exact property, not only “Diani”.

Reaching Watamu and Malindi

Malindi Airport offers the cleanest flight arrival. Watamu then requires a road transfer. From Mombasa, the northbound road passes the wider urban coast and Kilifi corridor; traffic can extend the journey. SGR passengers start at Miritini and must cross the metropolitan area before continuing north. A cheap rail ticket can become a long transfer day, so compare door-to-door time.

Reaching Lamu

Manda Airport sits across the channel from Lamu Island. The receiving boat should know the flight and destination jetty. Guests with mobility concerns need a realistic description of boarding, tide, wet steps and the walk from arrival point to room. Pack valuables and medication in a small waterproof or water-resistant bag.

Road travel in Lamu County requires current route and security assessment. We generally favour air for a first island visit. Flights from coastal and safari points vary by season; a route appearing on one date may not operate daily.

Who should choose which option?

Fly when time is limited, the safari already uses airstrips, or the destination is Ukunda, Malindi or Manda. Take rail when the journey itself appeals, baggage fits the rules and the onward Mombasa transfer is acceptable. Drive when Tsavo is part of the route, a private vehicle adds flexibility or several travellers make road logistics sensible.

Luggage and connection discipline

Soft bags are commonly required on small aircraft. Exact weight and dimensions depend on operator and ticket. Diving equipment, child seats and photographic cases must be declared early. Do not assume a late international arrival can connect to a safari airline at Wilson or to the last Coast flight. A resilient itinerary includes immigration, baggage collection, city traffic and check-in.

Frequently asked questions

Does the SGR go to Diani?

No. It reaches Mombasa Terminus at Miritini; Diani requires an onward road transfer.

Which airport serves Lamu?

Manda Airport, followed by boat transfer.

Can I fly directly from safari to the Coast?

Sometimes. Scheduled safari-airline networks may connect Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo, Samburu or other areas to Coast gateways, but routes and operating days must be checked for the exact date.

How much connection time do I need in Nairobi?

It depends on whether the flights use the same airport. A transfer between Jomo Kenyatta and Wilson needs generous time for traffic and separate check-in.
